In 2014, LGBT people were the most likely target of hate crimes of all minority groups, and the worst mass shooting in American history apparently targeted gay men at the Pulse night club in Orlando, Fla. LGBT Americans continue to be subject to violence because of their sexual orientation and gender identity. Despite those gains, however, LGBT people are still fighting for legal protection against discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodations. Perhaps the most significant milestone for the LGBT community came in June 2015, when the US Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriage is a legal right for all Americans. In recent years, however, the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender movement has won new rights and protections under state and federal laws. ![]() ![]() Even as recently as 1970, Connecticut denied a driver's license to a gay man on the basis of his sexual orientation. Throughout much of the 20th century, an admission of homosexuality could result in a felony conviction and a lengthy prison sentence.
